Taliban Launches Mationwidw Offensive in Pakistan/ Trouble for sheriff govt.
Pakistan Taliban ends ceasefire with gov’t threatens new attacks.
TTP-Pakistan Taliban –
The TTP said the decision to end the truce was taken after “a series of non-stop attacks were launched by the military organizations” in the Bannu and Lakki Marwat areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. It also said it had repeatedly warned the people about the violation of the ceasefire but showed patience so that the negotiation process was not ” Sabotaged at least by us”. The armed group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan also known as the Pakistani Taliban has announced the end of an indefinite ceasefire agreed upon with the government in June and issued orders to its fighters to carry out attacks across the country.
TTP – History –
Although Pakistani military actions, U.S. drone warfare, and factional infighting led to the TTP’s decline from 2014 to 2018, the militant group has been experiencing a strong resurgence since the Afghan Taliban and U.S. government signed a peace deal in February 2020. In fact, since July 2020, ten militant groups opposed to the Pakistani state have merged with the TTP, including, among others, three Pakistani affiliates of al-Qaeda and dour major factions that had separated from the TTP in 2014. Following these mergers, TTP violence has become more frequent, and this violent streak continues to accelerate as a result of the Afghan Taliban’s takeover of Kabul in August 2021.
Trouble For Sharif Govt?
It adds that the TTP also seeks to establish an Islamic caliphate in Pakistan which would require overthrowing of the Pakistani government. The timing of the TTP statement is crucial as last year the New Zealand cricket team canceled its tour of Pakistan after arriving in the country following a terrorist threat. It is not clear how the English team would respond to the announcement by the TTP to end the ceasefire.
It noted that the TTP accuses the Pakistani government of failing to fulfill its main demand-
the reversal of the merger of the former federally administered tribal area with khyber Pakhtunkhwa-as well as continuing to detain TTP members while a truce was still being negotiated.
TTP-Attacks –
Several deadly attacks across Pakistan, including an attack on army headquarters in the 2009 bombing of the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad. In 2012, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai was attacked by TTP.
